Welcome!

I am a research scientist in the Protégé group at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research. In 2006, I received my PhD in Computer Science from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. During 2001 - 2005, I worked in the Knowledge-based Engineering Department at DaimlerChrysler (now, Daimler) in Berlin, Germany. While there, I used Protégé to model engineering ontologies, to build knowledge-based application using ontologies, and in general, I used ontologies to solve all kind of real-world engineering problems.

In 2006, I joined the Protégé group at Stanford as a research scientist. My main research interest is the collaborative development of ontologies. Protégé is the most widely used open-source ontology and knowledge-base editor in the world with a community of over 200,000 users. I developed the collaborative extensions for Protégé, called Collaborative Protégé. I have also designed and implemented the first version of WebProtégé - a lightweight ontology and knowledge base editor for the Web that is extremely flexible and customizable for the domain experts. I am also leading the development of the ICD Collaborative Authoring Tool (iCAT) - an adaptation of WebProtégé that the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently using as a production tool to build the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).

I am also active in the Semantic Web research community. I am regularly reviewing for international Semantic Web journals and conferences. I have organized and chaired several major Semantic Web conferences. In 2012, I served as a Co-chair of the Semantic Web In Use track at the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2012) in Boston, USA, and in 2014, I am serving as a Co-chair of the Research track of the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2014) in Riva del Garda, Italy.
