Announcements

  • Welcome to CS 106A!
  • [8/15] Picking up graded final exams
Congrats on finishing up the quarter! If you would like to pick up your graded final exams, they have been placed in the filing cabinets outside Gates 182. These cabinets are on the first floor of the the Gates Computer Science Building (same building as LaIR and office hours, but on the 1st floor). There are filing cabinets on both sides of the hall, the one with the exams is against the wall with pictures of 106A/B section leaders - it is the top left drawer.

Several people have also asked when grades will be available on Axess, if you have completed your course evaluations, you should be able to view your grades in the next day or so. Per Stanford policy, the Axess system will automatically withhold your grade until August 20th if you have not completed the course evaluation.
  • [8/9] Submit questions for Q&A during Wednesday's lecture Wednesday's lecture will be a little different from normal - instead of preparing formal material, Rohit and Alisha will host a Q&A session. Questions can be about the course material, general computer science and programming topics, advice (future courses or directions, life advice, etc.), and anything else you want to know. Similar to the popular online AMA ("Ask Me Anything"), we will be taking questions in advance and answering most the interesting/popular ones during lecture.

Submit as many questions as you want here!

Note: questions are completely anonymous by default. There is a possibility we won't be able to get to all of the questions during class, and if you still want your question answered you can leave your email on the form (again, this is 100% optional).
  • [8/7] Practice exams There are two practice finals posted on the Handouts page of the website. We recommend taking these practice exams under realistic conditions - give yourself 3 hours to write out your answers completely on paper, then check your written answers against the answer key. Solutions to practice final #2 will be posted on Tuesday. Good luck studying!
  • [8/1] Midterm pickup If you still haven't picked up your midterm, you can pick it up from Alisha's and Rohit's office hours. If you can't make any of the posted office hours, email us both and we will figure something out.
  • [7/26] Midterm regrades and statistics Midterm statistics - average: 86/120, mediam: 92/120, standard deviation: 20 We took a lot of care to maintain consistency between exams when grading, but it's possible that you may find something that looks incorrect - we're human, after all. :) If you want to request a regrade, write a few sentences about which problems(s) you believe were graded incorrectly, and why you think that to be the case (i.e. you typed the solution into Eclipse and it works). Staple that summary onto the top of your exam and give it to the lecturers after class or during office hours by or on Tuesday August 2nd.
  • [7/18] Midterm tonight 7-9pm in Hewlett 200 The midterm exam will take place tonight, July 18th, from 7-9pm in Hewlett 200.
  • [7/11] Alisha's office hours moved to tomorrow: For this week only, Alisha's Monday office hours will be moved to Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm.
  • [7/7] Midterm exam conflicts: The midterm exam will take place on Monday, July 18th from 7-9pm in Hewlett 200. If you have an academic (or otherwise unavoidable) conflict with this time, please email Alisha and Rohit no later than Monday, July 11th so we can schedule an alternate time. Requests received after this date may not be accommodated.
We will talk more about the midterm in class next week.
  • [7/3] LaIR closed for Independence Day: Just a reminder that there are no assignment help hours at the LaIR this weekend due to Independence Day. Helper hours will resume on Tuesday night. Alisha will hold office hours as usual on Wednesday.
    Enjoy the long weekend!
  • [6/28] Assignment 1 due today:
Just a reminder that Assignment 1 (Karel) is due today at 5pm. Follow the instructions below to submit through Eclipse.
Note: The submitter will submit all of your assignment files together. In other words, you do not need to submit each file separately.
  • [6/22] Submitting Assignments:
All homework assignments will be submitted directly through Eclipse. Please follow these instructions to use the Eclipse submitter and verify your submission. You can submit as many times as you like (only your last submission will be graded).
Since this is the first assignment, we recommend testing the submission process early to work out any issues with the submitter. For example, you can submit a partial version right after you complete CollectNewspaperKarel, and then resubmit your final version whenever you finish the assignment.
  • [6/21] Assignment 1 Posted:
Assignment 1 is now posted! You can download the assignment handout and starter code from the Homework page of the website. The assignment is due next Tuesday, June 28th at 5pm. We recommend starting early and taking advantage of office hours/Old Union assignment help hours!
  • [6/20] Setting up Eclipse:
    1. Follow the instructions here to download and install Eclipse.
    2. Follow these steps to start using Karel in Eclipse!
  • [6/20] Section sign-ups: Please sign up for a weekly 50-minute discussion section by noon on Tuesday, June 21st. Section assignments will be sent out Tuesday night.
