Because this parasite is transmitted to humans via the fecal-oral route, it is important to increase public health services and education in order to protect humans from the contaminated feces of dogs and other canids. It is ill advised to eat food that has been grown in fields where dog feces are used as fertilizer. It is also important to not feed sheep brains or offal to dogs, since this is how they tend to come into contact with Taenia eggs. As a protective measure, routinely treat sheep herding/guard dogs or any domesticated dog with antihelminth agents if passing taeniid segments or eggs.
