Ban dogs from beaches. Prohibit dog-walking on beaches. Keep pets out of sandboxes.
Keep children out of possibly contaminated areas.
In developing tropical countries, where animal control is not possible, travelers should wear shoes when walking on beaches and avoid contact with the sand, especially in areas protected from the tides or shaded from intense sunlight that might kill the hookworms (i.e. especially the sand between the high and low tidal zones).
