Public Health and Prevention Strategies

For Pets: The CDC's recommendation if you own dogs or cats is to de-worm pets often and use preventive anthelminthic agents that are available in tablets, liquids, single or multiple daily doses, periodic or continuous treatments. and clean up pet droppings promptly.

I hope they all know about cutaneous larva migrans.

For Humans: Ban dogs from beaches. Prohibit dog-walking on beaches. Keep pets out of sandboxes. Keep children out of possibly contaminated areas.
In developing tropical countries, where animal control is not possible, travelers should wear shoes when walking on beaches and avoid contact with the sand, especially in areas protected from the tides or shaded from intense sunlight that might kill the hookworms (i.e. especially the sand between the high and low tidal zones).
