Original Description


The earliest known visual identification of the O. volvulus parasite was made by Irish Naval surgeon John O’Neill during his time of service on the H.M.S. Decoy.  In 1874, while examining skin snips from craw-craw patients in Ghana, Dr. O’Neill discovered the subcutaneous microfilaria.  He then published his findings in the medical journal The Lancet under the title, “On The Presence of a Filaria in “Craw-Craw.” (1)
