How to Declare

Students wishing to study, engage, and theorize the diverse experiences of peoples of the African Diaspora and Africa should consider a major or minor in African and African American Studies. In addition to being able to participate in a close intellectual community, majors have access to unique opportunities.

Step 1
The first step in becoming a AAAS major is to download this major declaration worksheet. Minors should download and fill in the minor declaration form. You also are invited to visit our offices in building 360 - 362B. When you come, you will be able to talk about your interests and find help with completing the declaration form.

Step 2
Fill in your worksheet . You should refer to our Undergraduate Requirements and List of Courses as well as check the Stanford Bulletin for quarterly offerings. Potential majors can select this sample worksheet with AAAS Undergraduate Requirements to get started.

Step 3
Choose a thematic emphasis and write one paragraph describing the emphasis and how you plan to satisfy its requirements. Selecting an emphasis allows you to synthesize coursework taken across various departments and programs into a coherent focus. Emphases offered include: Africa, African Americans, Class, Diaspora, Education, Gender, Historical Period, Identities, Diversity, & Aesthetics (IDA), Linguistics and Mixed Race.

For more detailed information about the Thematic Emphases, please review the Stanford Bulletin.

Step 4
Make an appointment to talk about your interests with the Director or Associate Director, who will help you locate a faculty advisor.

Step 5
Ask your faculty advisor to sign your form. The AAAS staff will actively help find an advisor, but another wonderful way to find one is simply to take classes from faculty on our affiliated faculty list, drop in during offices hours, and introduce yourself as a prospective AAAS major.

Step 6
Return the major worksheet to our offices for signatures from the Director and Associate Director. After the Declaration From is complete and signed, declare the AAAS Major over AXESS.
