Ann Blair, Harvard University: "Methods of Information Management in Early Modern Europe"

This talk will focus on the management of scholarly information in early printed reference books. It will examine the kinds of finding devices and methods of citation used in both widely diffused and exceptionally large reference books of the 16th and 17th centuries (notably the Polyanthea and Zwinger's Theatrum humanae vitae respectively). The paper will discuss their reception, which combined explicit criticism with continued use and a lasting impact on the better-known vernacular reference books of the late 17th and 18th centuries.  Details below.
