BIOSIS Merges with LANL's SearchPlus

BIOSIS Merges with LANL's SearchPlusBIOSIS at LANL, a database that indexes the literature of the life sciences, has been merged with SearchPlus, LANL's multi-database search system, giving searchers new options for using this important database. The new URL to use for searching BIOSIS is:

http://search.lanl.gov/

In SearchPlus, you can search BIOSIS alone or you can include INSPEC and the ISI citation indexes: SciSearch, Social SciSearch, and Arts & Humanities Search. Other databases will be added to SearchPlus in the future.

As in the past, you can search a long list of indexes, limit searches by date, language or document type, sort results, and mark records for viewing, emailing or downloading. You can also create Alerts to receive weekly notification of new articles on a topic or by an author of interest.

Several useful new features are available in BIOSIS as a result of its merger with SearchPlus:

• You can create a personal login and customize search and display features.

• An author lookup list allows you to select author names from an alphabetical display. This is a very valuable new feature for BIOSIS, where author names may appear in a variety of formats.

• Records in SearchPlus merge data from different databases and allow you to view indexing and other features from several sources.

• SearchPlus offers added options for downloading records.

• Cited reference searching is offered in SearchPlus for records that are available in the citation indexes.

• Finally, the single search system allows you to search more databases with greater ease.

BIOSIS indexes the literature of the life sciences, including plant biology, ecology and evolution, animal biology, cell and molecular biology, medicine and basic biomedical sciences, genetics, and related areas. It indexes journal articles, meeting abstracts, book chapters, and other documents, and covers literature published from 1969 to the present.

INSPEC indexes the literature of physics and electrical engineering, including computers and information technology. It indexes journal articles, conference abstracts, books, patents, and other literature, and it covers 1969 to the present. The ISI citation indexes cover journal literature in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

The unique feature of these indexes is citation searching, the ability to find journal articles that cite an earlier work. SearchPlus at LANL is the Web-based multi-database search system developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and available for use by faculty, staff, and students at Stanford.
