Changes to the Web-based catalog will be rolled out to the public in January 2000, including enhancements to the Socrates interface and the redesign of the Socrates start page.

On January 2nd, the latest enhancements to Web-based Socrates interface will be moved into production. The enhancements vary from the subtle addition of a second "search" button to a completely redesigned "expert search" screen. Strikingly Spartan, the new expert search screen offers command-line searching of the catalog. The minimal screen text provides easier LYNX (a text-only browser) access to the Web catalog, benefiting users with technological or physical limitations to Web-based searching. The expert search was re-conceptualized as a command-driven interface in part to prepare for the eventual retirement of Folio-based Socrates. The new expert search requires some initial study to use. Start by typing help in the expert search box. Then familiarize yourself with the three-letter commands and two-letter indexes that appear on the help screen.

The more obvious change to greet users in January will be the redesigned Socrates "start page". The current start page at http://socrates.stanford.edu contains the red "Start Socrates" button. The redesigned page will feature all three Socrates Web search interfaces, the course reserves catalog, plus a list of support documents, from search tips to off-campus access information. Coming soon is a Web-based tutorial covering basic searching in all three screens.

Library staff who are interested in a walk-through of the changes (including the new expert search) are invited to an introductory session on Socrates 2000. The session will be repeated three times:

January 6, 7, and 10, from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Information Center Training Room.

The Socrates 2000 enhancements culminate a year-long process by RISC to review and improve OPAC screens and functionality. Much time and effort has gone into this process; my sincere thanks to all the members of RISC for their steadfast engagement and attention to the many issues involved in enhancing Web-based Socrates. Among those who have played a central role in this process are Liz Green, Barry Hinman, Kathy Kerns, Joan Krasner, Ann Latta, Bryan McCann, Molly Molloy, Stella Ota, Barbara Sawka, Phil Schreur, Vitus Tang, Marilyn Tinsley, Paul Zarins, Reggie Wallen, and Olivia Williamson. A special note of appreciation goes to SUL/AIR Web Sovereign Jon Lavigne. Each and every change made to the Web catalog required Jon's time, consideration, and effort. We are grateful to him for his patience, his fortitude, his sense of humor, and above all, his shared interest in providing the Stanford community with the best possible interface to the library catalog.

RISC will continue to monitor needed enhancements for future upgrades but the January changes bring this current review process to a close. Staff and patrons are encouraged to use the "Tell Us" button to communicate Socrates-related questions/comments to RISC.

The Assistive Computer Technology Center's staff is rushing to apply the finishing touches to the Center over the Christmas break and expects to have a fully functional computer lab before the new millennium. Housed on the second floor of Meyer library, the ACTC promises to put a new, friendlier face on information technology by offering a number of alternative human-computer interaction strategies.

Even before this new computer lab has officially opened its doors, a number of students, staff, and faculty members have begun taking advantage of the ACTC's cutting-edge technologies. Voice recognition, aural interfaces, and thoughtful workstation ergonomics are just a few of these.

The ACTC is funded and managed by the Disability Resource Center. Its primary function is to serve Stanford affiliates with physical, cognitive, or sensory limitations that may impair or prevent independent access to conventional computer systems. However, the ACTC would like to serve as a model for a next generation of computer labs at Stanford and will make its technologies available as a resource for the entire Stanford community. Anyone who is interested in exploring new, perhaps more efficient, ways to interact with the computer is welcome to pay a visit. Watch for announcements of the ACTC's grand opening celebration!

Please join me in welcoming Rene Aguirre to the Stanford Auxiliary Library as a half time Library Specialist I. I'm sure most of you already know Rene from the many years that he worked at Green Library as a Portal Monitor. His familiarity with the Stanford University Libraries from his past work experience will be a great asset at SAL. While I'm sure that Rene's friendly demeanor will be missed at the Green Portals, we are very happy that he has joined us at SAL. Welcome Rene!

The Research Libraries Group (RLG) will temporarily suspend access to all RLG databases from 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time Friday, December 31, 1999 until 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time Saturday, January 1, 2000. Database access is normally available each Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time; during this additional eight-hour outage RLG staff will complete testing of all RLG online services to ensure that they work properly in the new century.

We are confident of the year 2000 readiness of RLG's databases and other services -- once database access is restored on January 1, 2000 we will return to our published availability schedule.

Thank you for tolerating this planned system outage -- we do not expect to do it again for this reason for a thousand years.
