Starting today, users can request that material housed in SAL be delivered to the following libraries: Art, Biology (Falconer), Chemistry/Chemical Engineering (Swain), Earth Sciences (Branner), Education (Cubberley), Engineering, Math and Computer Sciences, Music, and Physics. Delivery to Green will, of course, continue as well.

This new service feature will be available only through Socrates II. (Paging from SAL to Green will continue to be available through Socrates I.) When a user links to the "Request paging from SAL" form from a record in Socrates II, s/he will then have the option of requesting delivery to any of the above locations. The delivery schedule is as follows:

Delivery to Green Library: Requests submitted before 1:00 p.m. will usually be available after 4:30 p.m. on the same day.

Delivery to all other participating libraries: Requests submitted before 1:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, will usually be available for pick up after 4:30 p.m. on the NEXT day. Requests placed after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday will be available for pick up on the following Monday after 4:30 p.m. Requests submitted after 1:00 p.m. on Friday or any time on Saturday or Sunday will be available on the following Tuesday after 4:30 p.m.

We seek your help in getting the word out on employment opportunities for current SUL/AIR student employees (and any other students you know) who might want to work additional hours between now and Fall Quarter or who might still be looking for a summer job.

As you know, many moves and small facilities projects are underway in the Green/Meyer complex. The projects are necessary because of the reoccupation of Green Library West, various related space transitions, and the temporary summer relocation of services and people from the first floor of Green Library East while the Information Center/Current Periodicals construction project occurs.

There are innumerable tasks ranging from packing and unpacking help to more focused project assistance, which could benefit from student help. We can take people immediately on an hourly basis and would also be willing to discuss more substantive summer employment hours and assignments.

Miriam Palm is retiring after twenty-seven years of devoted service to Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources. Miriam has developed many friendships at Stanford, and we would be delighted if you joined us to celebrate her career and thank her for her many contributions to the Libraries. We hope you can come!

The festivities will be on Tuesday, May 11, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Stanford Faculty Club Gold Lounge.

We are busily compiling a "memory book" full of pictures, letters, and comments from Miriam's colleagues and friends. The book is available in the Approval Room (410 Meyer Library); please stop by and sign it. We also invite you to contribute photos or text that we will add to the book. The Presidential Lectures and Symposia in the Humanities and Arts will host a symposium this weekend entitled "Limits of Performance." The symposium will bring together scholars, athletes, artists, and medical experts to explore the limits of human potential; the medical, sociological, and psychological aspects of performance; and the consequences of the unbridled pursuit of achievement.

These topics will be discussed by a panel of experts, and a moderator will facilitate discussions among panelists and the audience. Participants include: Laurence Dreyfus, Harry Edwards, Ted Leland, Mike Montgomery, George Plimpton, Congressman Jim Ryun, Keri Strug, Debbie Thomas, Bill Walsh, Troy Walters, and many others. A complete listing of participants, short biographies, a topic description, and a detailed schedule are all available on the Presidential Lectures Web site:


The symposium consists of three sessions, all of which will be held at the Arrillaga Family Sports Center. The first session begins on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The remaining two sessions will be held on Saturday at 9:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m. Events are free and open to the public; tickets are not required. Q: Will there be an All-Hands meeting on May 12th as previously announced? Have the time and location been determined?

A: Two SUL/AIR all-staff meetings will take place on Wednesday, May 12th in Cubberley Auditorium, one from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and one from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The agenda topics for both meetings will be:

  • Green Library West reopening and move-in plans
  • Green Libary East plans, including those for the Information Center/Current Periodicals project
  • SUL/AIR advisory structure
  • Knowledge Enterprises intitiative

We hope that you will be able to attend one of these meetings.
