There are general bibliographies covering both Russian and Soviet imprints with an obvious emphasis on the Soviet publications. Therefore, the Mez'er bibliography retains its value for this period. The bibliographies listed below constitute a fundamental resource for any work in Russian literature. The prefaces delineate such important factors as sources of compilation, comprehensiveness, and editorial principles.

Mez'er, A.V. RUSSKAIA SLOVESNOST' S XI PO XIX STOLETIE VKLIUCHITEL'NO. BIBLIOGRAFICHESKII UKAZATEL' PROIZVEDENII RUSSKOI SLOVESNOSTI V SVIAZI S ISTORIEI LITERATURY I KRITIKI. KNIGI I ZHURNAL'NYIA STAT'I. St. Petersburg, Tip. Porokhovshchikova, 1899-1902. 2 vols.

Nikolai I. Matsuev (1894-1975) attempted to conduct current comprehensive registration of Soviet imprints. There are differences in comprehensiveness and arrangement between the various volumes of his bibliography of which users should be aware. The introductions to each volume should be consulted before using Matsuev's bibliographies.

A convenient place to start a bibliographic search in Russian literature for all periods, for teaching and research purposes, for literary works and criticism as well as for reference materials are the bibliographies prepared by G. Wytrzens, published by V. Klostermann in Frankfurt am Main as Sonderheften in the series ZEITSCHRIFT FUR BIBLIOTHEKSWESEN UND BIBLIOGRAPHIE (ZBB):

From a scholarly point of view the most important publisher is the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Its publishing house "Nauka" (its name since 1963) has published complete critical editions of major writers: Lomonosov, Radishchev, Pushkin, Gogol', Lermontov, Turgenev, Lev Tolstoi, Gleb Uspenskii, N.A. Nekrasov, Dostoevskii, Chekhov, Belinskii, Chernyshevskii, Dobroliubov, Gertsen, and Gor'kii. Its quarterly journal is RUSSKAIA LITERATURA. There are several series such as TRUDY OTDELA DREVNERUSSKOI LITERATURY, VOSEMNADTSATYI VEK, both sponsored by Pushkinskii Dom, LITERATURNYE PAMIATNIKI (criticial editions of texts), and LITERATURNOE NASLEDSTVO (unknown texts and archival literary documents). The Academy of Sciences sponsors major bibliographies, histories of literature and criticism, and various monographs. Numerous works appear under standardized titles such as N. (author's name) V RUSSKOI KRITIKE; LETOPIS' ZHIZNI I TVORCHESTVA N., N. I EGO SOVREMENNIKI. Information about publications is available through the Academy of Sciences annual bibliography

BIBLIOGRAFICHESKII UKAZATEL' IZDANII, OPUBLIKOVANNYKH ADADEMIEI NAUK SSSR. Leningrad, 1930-, published since 1956 as BIBLIOGRAFIIA IZDANII AKADEMII NAUK SSSR. (Annual). This serves not only as a bibliography of books but also as an index to all journals, collected works, papers, conferences, etc. published by the Academy of Sciences and all its branches. At the same time it provides the best available overview of ongoing research.

2. Regional bibliography

The prolific bibliographic and biobibliographic sources pertaining to literature created in various regions of the country can be examplified by

RUSSKAIA LITERATURA SIBIRI, XVII V.-1970 G. Novosibirsk, SO AN SSSR, 1976-7; 2 vols.

Regional bibliographies are most often published in a stardardized form of biobibliographic dictionaries. The listing below illustrates this approach:

URAL LITERATURNYI. KRATKII BIBLIOGRAFICHESKII SLOVAR'. Cheliabinsk, 1988.

PISATELI VORONEZHA. BIOBIBLIOGRAFICHESKII UKAZATEL'. Voronezh, Tsentral'no- chernozemnoe knizh. izd., 1969.

Bakhtin, V., Lur'e, A. PISATELI LENINGRADA. BIOBIBLIOGRAFICHESKII SPRAVOCHNIK. 1934-1981. Leningrad, Leninizdat, 1982.

search also for such standardized biobibliographies as:

PISATELI UDMURTII; ...DALNEGO VOSTOKA; ...DONA; ...IAKUTII; ...IUZNOGO URALA; ...KOMI; ...KUZBASSA; ...KUBANI; ...PENZY; ...PERMSKOI OBLASTI; ...ORLOVSKOGO KRAIA; ...SARATOVA; ...SEVERNOI OSETII, etc.

Extensive bibliographic activities are carried on by regional and republican libraries. (See General bibliography: regional.) Their current bibliographies (often with the generic title LITERATURA O... OBLASTI) are important for literary works and criticism.

3.Èmigrè and dissident literature

See also General bibliography: Èmigrè

Soviet bibliographies do not list èmigrè literature. Since 1990 effort is being made to rectify this lacunae. Western bibliographies of Russian literature such as Wytrzens, op. cit., AMERICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SLAVIC AND EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES, etc. will often include èmigrè literature.

Literature is particularly rich in non-bibliographic reference sources such as: encyclopedias, biographical sources, biobliographic dictionaries, chronicles of cultural events, dictionaries of pseudonyms, quotations, and writers' gathering places. See Non-bibliographic sources. Sources dealing with dictionaries of a single author's language, chronologies, dictionaries of an author's acquaintances, pictorial representations, etc., can be identified through personal bibliographies which are listed in bibliographies of bibliographies, guides both general and in literature, textbooks, and encyclopedias. Selected major literary encyclopedias and biographic dictionaries are listed below for convenience. There are also repeated in Non-bibliographic sources.
