Abstract: Tegula funebralis displays a characteristic "rise behavior," probably in response to gravity. The functional value of this is uncertain, but may be correlated with exposure to air; although such exposure is not necessary, it seems to be "preferred." T. funebralis is perhaps in the process of evolving into a land snail. The animals inhabit zones (MLLW) high enough to be exposed to the air at least once per day; the universality of the tides would explain the remarkable constancy of the lower limit.
