Abstract: The present study developed out of a need to identify young post-settlement specimens of four species of Balanus found on 8 X 10 inch wooden plates used for fouling studies by Dr. E.C. Haderlie of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Barnacle cyprids as well as larvae of other organisms settled on these plates; mortality of juveniles was sometimes high and many were killed before they had developed to a stage where they were easily identifiable on the basis of adult characters. For population studies it was desirable to find simple characters by which juveniles could be diagnosed.
