Abstract: 1. A relationship between the amount of urease activity in marine beach sediments and proximity to sewage outfalls has been demonstrated. 2. The amount of urease activity detectable is directly related to sediment particle size and can be related to the number of Proteus vulgaris added to sterile sediments. 3. Proteus vulgaris, a typical urease producer and an inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal tract show substantial survival in marine materials.
