Frequently Asked Questions

On-site preservation consultations are available to all staff in Stanford University Libraries.  Please contact us if you would like to schedule a consultation, or if you have a question about Preservation, Conservation, Book Repair, or Binding and Finishing.

For general questions, or if you are not sure who to contact, please phone Monique Murphy at 650-723-9304.

There’s a leak in the library!

First, call the SULAIR Facilities Department at 721-5559.

Then, please follow these procedures for responding to a collections emergency.  

I found a moldy book. 
The library’s foremost concern with mold-contaminated materials is human health and safety. If you encounter a moldy item, place it in a plastic bag and then wash your hands.  If you encounter multiple moldy items, please call Preservation immediately.

I have a wet book.
The Preservation Department assists Stanford University Libraries with all water-related collections issues, including the drying of wet books.  Please call Preservation immediately if you have more than a few wet books, a dripping wet book, a muddy book, or if you have wet materials with glossy paper.
Otherwise, if you would like to dry one or two wet books yourself, please follow the Guidelines for Drying Wet Books.

You can also call Book repair to request assistance.  For questions about wet books, or to report wet books, please contact Monique Murphy at 650-723-9304.

I think there might be an insect problem in my library.

I have questions about the environmental conditions in my library.

I need to request supplies

For book plates, glue sticks, SELIN tape, Grip-Tites, or media enclosures, contact Laura Cameron at 723-3401.  For all other requests, contact Monique Murphy at 650-723-9304.

I need to request preservation signs, bookmarks, or place-marking paper strips for staff and patron use.

I would like assistance in preparing for an exhibition.

Our department is planning a large project.  Is it possible for us to temporarily increase our Book Repair quota?

Book Repair does have some flexibility in respect to the number of items it receives monthly.  Often, the unit will temporarily accept additional materials to accommodate the needs of library departments.  For questions regarding Book Repair quotas, please contact Maria Grandinette at 723-0394.

Our department will be undergoing renovations soon.  How can I protect the collection during remodeling?

The Preservation Department assists Stanford University Libraries in preventing damage to collections during renovation.  For questions regarding preservation of materials during renovation, please contact Kate Contakos at 650-724-2958.

Our department is thinking about acquiring a collection in poor condition.  Can you help us assess the preservation needs of the collection?
The Preservation Department will conduct collection assessments on materials both prior to accession and during processing.
