Searching with Google

Searching keywords in a web site such as the Daily Times newspaper from Malawi.

Retrieving only documents in PDF. hiv aids lesotho filetype:pdf

Other Google search tips and Google tip sheet.

Stanford Users see Dissertations & theses, A&I (Dissertation Abstracts) and some Stanford full text dissertations online. You need to put and between the search keywords.

Dissertations and Theses on Africa (African Collection page) lists sources from various countries. Generally it's only easy to obtain U.S. dissertations quickly. University of Pittsburg has citations to theses on AIDS (Social and Historical Contexts)

However, from the sources on the Dissertations and Theses on Africa page, you can find some universities which put the full text of dissertations on-line.

Examples of some University of the Western Cape (South Africa) Masters theses -
An exploration of promoters and inhibitors of coordination between organizations involved in HIV/AIDS activities in Livingstone District, Zambia. By Duffrine Chishala Chibwe.

Assessment of genome visualization tools relevant to HIV genome research: development of a genome browser prototype

African Newspapers

Current newspapers are listed on the Stanford African Collection site. There are no indexes to the newspaper articles except for the Kenya Indexing Project which indexes articles in the Daily Nation (Nairobi), The East African (Nairobi), The East African Standard, and The People. You can find citations to articles, then look for the issues. We have holdings of all of the newspapers (years vary).

A major problem in using the newspapers is the Socrates record can be incomplete. For example, Socrates, says we only have issues of the Uganda government newspaper, New Vision, from 2001. We actually have issues from 1986 in SAL-Newark.

For the Botswana Guardian, Socrates says we have issues from 2001, but we actually have issues from 1986.

[Someone could do a project on the Uganda government's AIDS awareness efforts as found in the govt. newspaper. The first documented AIDS cases in Uganda were in the early 1980s.]

Hoover Archives has a Poster Collection which includes some older AIDS education posters. If someone wants to see the posters for their research, go to the Hoover Archives and ask Carol Leadenham, Assistant Archivist ( for the African HIV/AIDS posters. The Hoover Archives is open Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Northwestern University Library has a online video of some of their AIDS posters.

Music and AIDS

A Little Bit of Love
AIDS / HIV awareness campaign by Ugandan musicians. Video and documentary produced by Scott Hatfield. The U.S. Military HIV Research Program site has the lyrics to A Little Bit of Love, created by over 30 Ugandan music artists for HIV education. See also the YouTube video. Artists include Juliana Kanyomozi. The song/video was commissioned by the Makerere University-Walter Reed Project ( a non-governmental, non-profit HIV research program established in 2002. A 20 minute documentary about the making of the song/video was created.

Museke - Museke, a site for African music lyrics includes a section on popular music for AIDS awareness.

There are also sites using edutainment on African Health and Medicine (African Collection page).

"Musicians should change their HIV and AIDS discourse" critical of negative images in songs.
Tuli Bamuchaala - We are the oprhans CD about a CD by HIV/AIDS orphans produced by Zimbabwean musican Oliver Mtukudzi. Includes audio clip.

Films and Videos

For films at Stanford, do a Combined Search in Socrates.

Limit Format to Films/Visual.

Using keywords AIDS Africa retrieves 21 items.
5 of the 21 are not relevant (audiovisual - aids in the subject)
Using keywords HIV Africa retrieves less items but one new one which is somewhat relevant.

African Films and Videos (Stanford African Collection directory) has information on films about HIV/AIDS. See for example Local Films (Stand Like Still Living, The Children They Are Left With, and Speak Luvo, Speak Jane). Also Steps for the Future; It's Not Easy; Tsha Tsha; Yesterday.
