How to Subscribe/Unsubscribe to a List.

Lists whose subscription address starts with listserv, listproc, mailserv, or majordomo, are generally automated lists. The program automatically subscribes you. For example to subscribe to CAMNET (a list on Cameroon) at CAMNET@vm.cnuce.cnr.it

  1. send e-mail to the listserv address, in this case: listserv@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
  2. leave the Subject area blank
  3. in the Message area put: subscribe NameofList YourFirstName LastName
  4. then exit from your mail program

The screen would appear as follows:

To: listserv@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
From: your e-mail address
Subject:
Message area:
subscribe CAMNET Nelson Mandela
[if Nelson Mandela is your real name]

Do not send your subscription request to the list address itself, that is, don't send your subscription request to CAMNET@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
A message to CAMNET@vm.cnuce.cnr.it would go to everyone on the CAMNET list.

You will receive an automated reply that you have been added to the list. Keep a copy of the message on how to unsubscribe.

To unsubscribe, one generally sends e-mail to the same listserv address and puts in the message area: signoff NameOfList
or: unsubscribe NameOfList

The screen would appear as follows:
To: listserv@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
Subject:
Message:
signoff Camnet

If the list moderator/owner has set up an archive, you can retrieve past messages. Send email to the listserve address. Leave the Subject area blank. In the Message area put: index NameOfList
The screen might appear as follows:

To: listserv@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
Subject:
Message:
index Camnet

A log containing dates of archived messages is automatically emailed back to you. You'll have to guess what date a particular message was sent. For example, one of the archived message files might be named LOG9708 for messages sent August 1997. To retrieve that file, send email to the listserv address again. In the Message area put: get NameOfList log9708
For example -

To: listserv@vm.cnuce.cnr.it
Subject:
Message:
get Camnet log9708

You may receive back a very large email message if the log files are large.
