  • Great Britain. Public Record Office. Kew lists: the microfiche edition, 1986. The Kew lists include, in alphanumeric order of class code, all the class lists of records normally kept, and made available for public inspection, at the Public Record Office at Kew. Classes normally kept at the Public Record Office, Chancery Lane, are not included. In other words, we've got good coverage of CO, FO, HO and Cab., but none of E., SP. Or put another way, we're pretty good on 19th-20th century files, but little to no coverage on pre-19th century files. LOCATION: SSRC MFICHE 2413.
  • Index to the House of Commons parliamentary papers on CD-ROM (1996). Indexes all House of Commons parliamentary papers published from 1801 to the present. It draws together material from Chadwyck- Healey's Subject catalogue of the House of Commons parliamentary papers 1801-1900, the House of Commons decennial indexes covering the period 1900-1979, and data from the Parliamentary Online Information Service (POLIS) database form 1979 onwards. LOCATION: Green Library CD-ROM network (library kiosks: Start>CDrom network)

Introduction

...students of the past are also limited by their raw material. They depend...on a complicated administrative machinery which supplies them with the tools of their trade in the forms of files, memoranda, debates and commission reports. The evidence produced, selected, and preserved by administrators, government statisticians, archivists, filing clerks, and record managers helps to determine the very nature of subsequent research. (1)

This guide emphasizes (but is not restricted to) the rich collection for Africa of British documents in the Stanford libraries. There is a separate guide covering bibliographies of official publications of African countries and former African colonies.

You will find three major classes of British documents covered here: published material (as in the Parliamentary Papers); printed but not published material (the Confidential Print); and other archival material (as a variety of Colonial Office and Foreign Office records). Stanford owns this material either in print or microform (and sometimes in both formats). Additionally, the library owns the great compilations of documents retrospectively created documenting British foreign relations:

  • Great Britain. Foreign Office. Documents on British foreign policy, 1919-1939. London, H. M. Stationery Off., 1946-. LOCATION: Stanford Auxiliary Library 327.42.G78. NOTES: Incomplete contents: ser. 1. 1919-1939. 27 v.--ser. 1a. 1925-1930. 7 v.--ser. 2. 1929- 1938. 21 v.--ser. 3. 1938-1939. 10 v. "Massive and authoritative source books for scholars, compiled with full access to Foreign Office archives and with full freedom of selection. These contain an immense volume of otherwise unpublished data, including not only correspondence but even telegrams and records of conversations." (Rodgers)
  • Great Britain. Foreign and Commonwealth Office. British and foreign state papers. London, H. M. S. O. 170 v. LOCATION: Government Documents 354.4211.F7. NOTES: v. 1-170; 1812-14--1967-68. Vols. for 1812-14--1959-60 issued by the Foreign Office. Indexes: Vols. 1-20 in v. 21, pt. 1; vols. 1-42, 1373- 1853, in v. 43; vols. 1-63, 1373-1873, in v. 64; vols. 65- 79, 1873-1888, in v. 80; vols. 65-92, 1873-1900, in v. 93; vols. 94-114, 1900-1921, in v. 115; vols. 116-137, 1922- 1934, in v. 138; vols. for 1935-60 in v. 165; vols. for 1961-68 in v.170. "A collection of texts of treaties and other related documents such as Acts, communiqués, protocols and exchanges of diplomatic correspondence." (Rodgers)

Other printed editions and compilations of documents have been created for different purposes. A recent example is the first Africa volume (Ghana) in the British documents on the end of the empire series. This kind of material can normally be identified in online library catalogs by the genre of search "FIND SUBJECT KENYA SOURCES", etc. (as well as of course by means of bibliographies such as those in The Cambridge history of the British Empire, 8 v.). Examples:

  • Ghana / editor, Richard Rathbone. London : HMSO, 1992. 2 v. : maps; 26 cm. LOCATION: Green Library Stacks DT509.13.G47 1992. SERIES: British documents on the end of the empire. The Confidential Print is printed but unpublished material for ministry and other government use. It normally does not reproduce minutes, and does not represent the entirety of archival material on any particular issue. See p.xiii of the introduction of each volume of the University Publications of America (UPA) edition for exclusions from that set.

Hoover's microfilm confidential print set includes Colonial Office and Foreign Office prints. The Green Library UPA edition is Foreign Office Confidential Print except for CO material for the Cape Province, 1848-.

The following material is not included in the UPA published edition:
State Papers. A category of command papers that are collected into volumes at the end of each year of the Parliamentary Papers and arranged into two groupings: State Papers, General and International; State Papers, Treaties. Some are also found in British and Foreign State Papers. The State Papers issued by Command are additionally divided into three series: Treaty, Country, and Miscellaneous.
Diplomatic Papers. A large amount of Foreign Office material was issued as diplomatic "blue books" (not the colonial blue books mentioned later) and were published in the Parliamentary Papers as Command Papers. See Temperley (1938) A century of diplomatic blue books 1814-1914. LOCATION: Green Library SSRC Z2009.T28; Vogel (1963) A Breviate of British Diplomatic Blue Books 1919-1939.
