Structure searching in CAS Online using STN Express: An introductory workshop

Building structures: Drawing the carbon skeleton

  • Use Template (menu bar choice)
  • Use Pencil tool
    • Macintosh version: When the pencil is positioned on an atom, the body of the pencil is black. When the pencil is on a bond, the eraser of the pencil is black.
    • Windows version: When the pencil is positioned on an atom, the letter “A” appears in the pencil. When it is positioned on a bond, a line appears in the pencil.
  • Use Chain tool
  • Use Ring tool
To Specify Enter Examples
Size of Ring Number to specify ring size 6
Fused Rings Enter size of ring. Specify direction of fusion by entering U for Up and D for Down 66
Alternating Bonds Mac version: hold down Apple Key when positioning the ring

Tip: To eliminate the possibility of inadvertently superimposing two nodes on top of one another, choose Display in the menu bar and choose the Dot Atoms display format.
