How Do I Find?

Films or Slides

The best way to identify films or slides is to start with Socrates, Stanford's online catalog.

  • Select the Combined Search tab.
  • Select Films/Visual as Format.

Then use or combine any of the following

  • Author - for any person or organizations responsible for the film or slides. This includes directors, actors, screenwriters, singers, performing groups, production companies, distributors, etc., e.g.,
    woody allen
    eisenstein
    united artists
  • Title - for words from the title of a film or series, e.g.,
    maltese falcon
    eye on dance
  • Subject - for words from the assigned subject headings, e.g.,
    gays
    feature films
  • Everything - to search for anything else in the record that has been indexed, except for call number, e.g.,
'english subtitles' [The single quotes make this a phrase.]

Browsing DVDs in Green Library

  • Use the Call Number Browse tab.
  • Enter zdvd followed by a number [Be sure to leave a space between zdvd and the number.]
  • Select Green as the Library
  • Select Other as the Shelving Scheme

Searching by Other Formats

  • Videodiscs - Enter videodisc$ in the Everything box.
  • VHS videos - Enter vhs in the Everything box.
  • Slides - Enter slides {300} in the Everything box.
  • 16mm films - Enter reel$ and 16 {300} in the Everything box.

To find

  • Foreign language films - set Language to the appropriate language by scrolling down the list of languages, then search by any of the above.
  • Closed-Captioned films - enter 'closed captioned' in the Everything box. Can be combined with other types of searches. Note: Be sure to include single quotes and omit the hyphen.
  • Documentary films - enter documentary in the Everything box. Can be combined with other types of searches.

Once you have found the films or slides you want, note the library and call number. In Green Library, most films and slides are shelved in the Media Microtext Center on the Lower Level of Green East. The stacks are closed, so request materials by call number.
