There are several Green Library Locations. Directions below are from the first floor of the East Wing.

Current Periodicals: First Floor East Wing; to your right as you face the stairs

Information Center: First floor, East Wing

Loan Desk: First floor, East Wing; two rights off the stairs

Media/Microtext: Downstairs, then left to glass-walled room

SAL (Stanford Auxiliary Library): this is a separate building. You can go there or page materials materials.

SSRC (Social Sciences Resource Center): to your right, first floor Bing Wing

Elevator access to the West stacks is near the front of the Bing Wing to the left of the portal before you exit toward the Quad. The East wing elevator is by the stairs across from the Information Center desk.

Finding Call Numbers for Other Magazines and Periodicals

  • In Socrates (Stanford's web catalog) click on the red Browse search button.

  • In the Browse screen, click on the button for Periodical Ttitle
  • In the Starting Point box, type the beginning words of the title of the journal and press Enter/Return key or click on the Browse button. (Donít use the title of the article! Socrates doesnít list articles.)
  • From the list of periodicals you retrieve, select your title by clicking on it.
  • The next screen is usually the BRIEF display. To see what the library owns you need to look at the DETAILED display.
  • Click on the red Long button by the entry you wish to know more about. (If only one record is found you will go immediately to the DETAILED display.)
  • At the bottom of the DETAILED display, you will see what the Library owns and the call number to the journal.
  • Use a Stack Directory the find where in the library the call number is located in the library.

Circulation & Bindery Information

To see if a volume is checked out, is at the bindery, on hold, etc., look at the DETAILED record. At the bottom of the screen, near the call number, any items that are checked out or at the bindery will be listed.

Requesting Material from the Stanford Auxiliary Library

  • Search in Socrates for the item you need.
  • Look at the DETAILED display; at the bottom of the screen you will see a link "page this item". Click on it to reach the paging form.
  • Fill in the information requested. Allow 24 hours for staff to retrieve the item; go to the Loan Desk to pick it up.
  • Bring the call number (including volume/year, etc.)
