Encyclopedias and handbooks can provide useful descriptions, overviews, and lists of references.

Encyclopedia of Bioethics, 3rd. ed. (Green Library Information Center QH332.E52 2004) has essays on abortion, fertility control and many related topics. See the "Topic Outlines" at the beginning of volume 1.

Encyclopedia of Birth Control. ABC-CLIO (Green Library Information Center HQ766 .E52 2001)

The Moral Imagination: Confronting the Ethical Issues of Our Day (Green Library Information Center BJ1031.T57 1995) pp. 11-62 cover abortion, while other chapters look at suicide and euthanasia.

Abortion: A Reference Handbook, 2nd ed. (Green Library Information Center HQ767.5.U5 C67 1996) includes a chronology of opinion, biographical sketches, laws and cases, statistics, organizations, glossary, index, and a select bibliography.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (Green Library SSRC H41 .I58 2001) articles reflecting not only the canonical social sciences, but also "the biological and cultural 'co-construction' of behavior and society."

The Encyclopedia of Religion (Green Library Information Center BL31.E46 1987) has a long essay (with bibliography) on the "Family" (v. 5, pp. 276-282) and its connections to religion.

Encyclopedia of Social Work, 19th ed. 1995 (Green Library Information Center HV35.E5) contains lengthy articles and bibliographies on topics such as "Families," "Family Change," "Domestic Violence," and "Child Sexual Abuse."

Encyclopedia of Sociology (Green Library Information Center HM17.E5 1992) has articles on a number of topics related to the families. Essays tend to be long with good bibliographies.

Encyclopedia of European Social History from 1350 to 2000 (Green Library Information Center HN373.E63 2001) especially vol. 4 which includes a section on the Family.

ATLA Religion Database (1949+) includes some fulltext (ATLAS)

LexisNexis Academic - selected Lexis-Nexis files especially good for fulltext news, business, and law information. Limited to Stanford students, faculty, and staff.

Alternative Press Index (1991+ available on the Web ; 1969-71; 1974+ shelved at Green Library Information Center Z7164.S66A5) indexes periodicals devoted to social change, including some gay/lesbian periodicals.

Alt-PressWatch provides fulltext of "a collection of newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press."

America: History and Life (1964+) covers U.S. and Canadian history. Includes abstracts

Anthropology Plus (1984+)

Black Studies on Disc SUNet ID required. (1988+ ) contains the Catalog of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and 1988+ of the Index to Black Periodicals (see information on print holdings below.) Contains information on materials by and about African Americans, Africa and peoples of African ancestry.

Chicano Database (1967+) includes some citations for earlier years. A comprehensive bibliographic information resource about the Mexican American experience identifying the Chicano body of literature, including the broad Latino experience of Puerto Rican, Cuban and Central American immigrants. full-text information on Congress and American politics.

Sociological Abstracts (1963+) Indexes articles concerned spectrum of social behavior (individuals, small groups, large organizations, communities, institutions, and societies). Statistical Handbook of the American Family (Law Library HQ536 .S727 1999) combines "previously unpublished materials along with the compilation of family data from a wide array of published material." Index.

America's families and living arrangements (U.S. Census Bureau)

Statistical Abstract of the United States (Green Library Information Center Ready Reference HA202.A483) published annually, it gathers together a wealth of statistical information from a variety of governmental and non-governmental sources. Forum on Child and Family Statistics
