ArtAbstracts, 1984 — present. Includes abstracts of articles on architecture, design, urban planning. Includes an international perspective.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, second revised edition, supplements and continuation, 1977. Includes abstracts in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, city planning and housing.

Sage Full-text Collection — Sociology. Provides full-text access to over 125 journals published by Sage Publications.

Social Sciences Module from ProQuest, 1971 — present. Indexes over 400 social sciences journals with good coverage of urban development and culture. Extensive full-text.

Sociological Abstracts, 1952 — present. World-wide coverage of articles in sociology and related disciplines.

Government Information & Policy

Index to Current Urban Documents, 1972 — present. Indexes reports, including budgets, plans, and surveys, from large cities and counties. Location: Indexes in Green Library Information Center, Z1224.AI53 and on the Internet. (See Socrates record.)

LexisNexis Congressional, 1789 — present. Provides full-text access to U.S. government legislative and regulatory materials, reports, and public policy.

LexisNexis State Capitol. Provides access to government information and policy including state bills and statutes, constitutions, and regulations. Also provides information from journals and other news.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service), 1972 — present. Indexes social and public policy literature.

PolicyFile. Indexes research reports from public policy think tanks, university research programs, research organizations and publishers.

News Sources

Ethnic News Watch, 1960 — present. Covers ethnic, minority, and native press and provides full-text coverage of news, culture, and history.

LexisNexis Academic. Provides full-text access to news sources including local, U.S. and international.

Statistical Sources

The following titles provide statistical snapshots of American cities including data on population, housing, and economic development:

County and City Databook. Contains U.S. government (Census Bureau) data on counties and cities.

State and Metropolitan Area Databook, 1979 — present . Contains U.S. government (Census Bureau) data on state and MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) levels.

LexisNexis Statistical. Provides federal, state and local government, and international government statistics. Coverage includes population, economic, social, and governmental statistics. Use the “Search Abstracts” search form.

RAND California. Provides access to California economic and public policy issues and statistics.


Book of the World, 1995. Provides satellite photographs and maps of the world including city centers of many international and U.S. cities. Location: Earth Sciences Library Reference, G1021 .K3842 1995.

Street Atlas USA, 1999, CD-ROM. Contains street-level maps of the United States. Provides access to more than twelve million street segments and over one million lakes, ponds, rivers, parks, and railroads. Identifies elevation lines and block numbers of streets. Users can print and export maps, search by name, block range, town, zip code, and telephone area code and exchange. Location: Earth Sciences Library, Reference, G1201 .P2 S77 1999.


Interlibrary Services. Books and articles not available at Stanford may be borrowed for Stanford faculty and students from other libraries. It is important first to determine that Stanford does not own the needed materials.

Social Science Data and Software (SSDS). Provides consulting support for data analysis, and for spatial analysis, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Subject Specialists Directory. Subject specialists are available for research consultation. They provide research assistance and facilitate access to materials. Your first stop for research help should be the Information Center.
