Fieldwork Opportunities

Many opportunities exist for undergraduate and graduate students to become involved in archaeological field work -- in fact, participation in field research is one of the requirements for the undergraduate major.

Stanford Archaeology Center 2015 Summer Field Schools:

Email lancy@stanford.edu for applications, due dates below:

Çatalhöyük (Turkey) - Professor Ian Hodder - Nov. 14, 2014

Chavín de Huántar (Peru) - Professor John Rick - Dec. 5, 2014

Mauritian Archaeology and Cultural Heritage project (Mauritius) - Professor Krish Seetah - Feb. 2, 2015

Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project in Sicily (Italy) - Professor Justin Leidwanger - Feb. 2, 2015

Current ongoing projects:

The Stanford Gym on campus - Dr. Laura Jones

Market Street Chinatown in San Jose, California - Professor Barbara Voss

For information on a specific faculty member's project, it is usually best to contact that person directly. You are also welcome to stop by the Archaeology Center and speak to the student services specialist (room 114, lancy@stanford.edu) who can provide you with more information about each project and the application process. Our undergraduate peer advisors are also available and can share their personal experiences from their time at several of the field schools.

For other opportunities, undergraduates should check out the office of Undergraduate Research Opportunities, located in Sweet Hall. URO offers funding for undergraduates who want to pursue independent research projects. They have firm application deadlines, so be sure to check their site early and often!
