"Bing Nursery School is a national treasure," described Eleanor E. Maccoby, Professor Emerita of Psychology. The school was constructed as a laboratory school in 1966 with a grant from the National Science Foundation and a gift from Dr. Peter S. Bing, an undergraduate at the time, and his mother, Mrs. Anna Bing Arnold. It is part of the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University and serves as a laboratory for the Department of Psychology. The mission of the school is to provide a laboratory setting for research where faculty members and graduate students can conduct research in child development, to provide a sound educational environment for young children, to teach undergraduate and graduate students about young children through observation and experience in the classroom, and to partner with both parents and educators in helping to improve the lives of young children and their families. "In order to do this, we need to provide an exemplary nursery school," stated Robert S. Sears, Professor of Psychology, who was Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences at the time the school was founded.
At Bing we are cognizant of what children and parents will be facing in their educational journey and we are committed to providing children the strongest foundation to solidify this love of learning. For young children, these skills include the cognitive, social, emotional and physical. Attitude formation begins early in young children, so it is essential they have repeated opportunities to engage in spontaneous play, using their creative, imaginative and curious selves. Fostering children's interest and motivation, their analytical abilities, the ability to be engaged and focused in an activity that they choose are some of the basic building blocks that will fortify this emerging disposition towards learning. With experienced and dedicated teachers who are well-educated in child development, we know that the children who come through our doors will be respected and supported as they grow and develop into competent young people. - Jennifer Winters, Director
