The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation presents David Konstan: Beauty Transformed: What Happened to the Ancient Greek Idea?

Wednesday, April 24, 2013
5:15 pm – 7:00 pm
Building 110, Room 112
Join us at 5:00pm for light refreshments.
Does beauty necessarily stimulate desire – and is the desire erotic?  We speak of a beautiful person and a beautiful painting, but are we using the word “beautiful” in the same way?  Taking as a point of departure the (much debated) ancient Greek conception of beauty, the talk will examine the connection between beauty and erôs.
David Konstan is Professor of Classics at New York University and Professor Emeritus of Classics and Comparative Literature at Brown University.  He has published books on ancient friendship, pity, emotions, and forgiveness, and is currently working on a book on ancient Greek conceptions of beauty and their heritage. He is currently a senior visiting scholar with the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
