Alan is a 4th year student on the Classical Literature PhD track at Stanford. He received a BA in 2008 and an MA in 2009 from the University of Durham in the UK, writing an MA dissertation on Simonides, the Persian War epigrams and public memory. He is currently working on a dissertation which studies the development of inscribed epigram in Classical Greece, focusing on links between epigram and oral poetry as well as the reception and dissemination of inscribed epigram in Classical Greek authors.
His wider research interests include hymns and religious texts, historiography, travel literature and Old Comedy. His interest in the latter has been fired by Stanford Classics in Theater (scit.stanford.edu) with whom he has translated, produced and acted in several ancient comedies as well as serving as financial officer and president.
