First Year > Grading

The final grade in all courses in the first-year program is comprised of the following components:

  • Preparation & Participation/Portfolio Assignments: 30%
    • Daily in-class participation and enthusiasm 6%
    • Advance preparation: Supersite, homework, etc. 6%
    • Portfolio - Interpersonal communication: work with native conversation partner 6%
    • Portfolio - Interpretive communication: self-directed reading and listening to authentic materials 10%
    • Compilation and Progress Card self-assessment 2%
  • Presentational: 15%
    • Compositions (2) 10%
    • Oral presentation 5%
  • Evaluative: 55%
    • Diagnostic assessments:
      • in class (reading, listening, writing) 5%
      • in the Language Laboratory (oral, writing) 5%
    • Final SOPI/interview with instructor 15%
    • Midterm 10%
    • Final Exam 20%

The following grading scale is used throughout the Spanish Language Program:

A+ 98-100%

B+ 88-90.9%

C+ 78-80.9%

D+ 68-70.9%

A 94-97.9%

B 84-87.9%

C 74-77.9%

D 64-67.9%

A- 91-93.9%

B- 81-83.9%

C- 71-73.9%

D- 61-63.9%
