F-Test Stipulations

In order to apply this equation, we must first stipulate that s²₁ represents the larger of the two sample variances, and that s²₂ represents the smaller of the two variances.  Second, the values of s²₁ and s²₂ must correspond to n₁ and n₂, respectively.  n₁ and n₂, along with the significance level  are used in determining the rejection region within the graph.  The F-distribution table requires three variables:

• The Significance Level
• The Degrees of Freedom for the numerator= n₁-1
• The Degrees of Freedom for the denominator= n₂-1
