On-campus Housing

Most couples without children are assigned to one bedroom apartments in Escondido Village. The newly constructed Kennedy Graduate Residences in Escondido Village provide studio apartments for couples without children. There are also a small number of studio and one bedroom apartments available in the Munger Graduate Residence. Two-student couples who are both enrolled, matriculated Stanford students are also eligible for a very limited number of one-bedroom plus den and two-bedroom apartments in Escondido Village.

Graduate and undergraduate students who are married or in a domestic partnership with a partner who will co-occupy an apartment with them at least 50% of each week are eligible to live in graduate couples housing. At Stanford, a domestic partnership is defined as an established, long-term partnership between two people with an exclusive mutual commitment in which the partners share the necessities of life and ongoing responsibility for their mutual welfare.  Undergraduates may not apply for couples housing for summer if they are currently in single student housing and are applying for single student housing for the following year.

In situations where both spouses/partners are Stanford students, only one student must be enrolled to maintain eligibility for housing. However, in two bedroom and one bedroom plus den apartments, both students must be enrolled for the contract period or approved to be in housing while on leave (students can gain approval by using Axess and filing a petition with Housing Assignments).

Off-campus Subsidized Housing Options for 2014-15

Stanford may offer spaces at the following apartment complexes in Menlo Park and Palo Alto if needed to help meet the demand for housing this year. These subsidized off-campus apartments will be offered along with the on-campus options in the waiting list and continuous assignment rounds of housing assignments. You may add them to your list of preferences in Axess after the May Lottery deadline. These units are furnished and your subsidized housing charges will include Internet and utilities. Off-campus subsidized apartments are only available through the end of this Summer Quarter as we may need them to meet demand for guaranteed first-year students next year.

Off-Campus Housing

Rental housing is available near Stanford, but the University is located in a highly desirable suburban area in the heart of Silicon Valley. Consequently, off-campus rental rates are relatively high compared to many other regions of the United States and even other parts of the Bay Area.

If you decide to live off campus, plan to arrive at Stanford at least two weeks early to take advantage of a wider range of housing choices.

You can check local rental listings, accessible only to Stanford students and affiliates, at Student Housing’s Community Housing website. You will be directed from there to the rental listings, which are available through the Places4Students web site. You will either need a Stanford email address to view the rental listings, or may contact Housing Assignments for a temporary password.
