ABOUT THE TAPS DEPARTMENT COSTUME SHOP

Pictures are worth a thousand words, and in the immediate visual impact costumes have on actors and audiences alike, costumes similarly speak volumes about the characters we create on stage. Bringing the words and characters to life, our Costume Shop is an integral part of the theatrical storytelling process. Often working on several dozen costumes at once, the Costume Shop shepherds the entire process through design sketches to fabric swatches to color choices to numerous fittings to the fully-realized costumes audiences see on stage.

Our staff also loves working with students. Students who work in the Costume Shop contribute directly to the Department productions, and often working in one-on-one settings with our staff, they quickly build and gain confidence in their skills in costume design and production.

The Costume Shop is located on the first floor of Memorial Hall at the end of the back hallway closest to Memorial Way.

WHAT WE DO

production design + build

Bringing life to the characters on stage, our hard-working and talented team in the Costume Shop designs and builds hundreds of costumes -- everything from elegant period gowns to “Beyond Bizarre” getups -- every year.

education + advising

From advising on the appropriate styles for a particular period to teaching the differences between a box pleat and a knife pleat, the Costume Shop is a valuable resource for students interested in costume and fashion.

historical collection

TAPS houses the Historical Costume Collection, with garments dating back to the mid-1700s. With close to 500 pieces, manycollected by Jane Stanford, the Collection is used to help students understand and recreate the textiles and construction of historical garments.
