Alternative Spring Break: The Week that Lasts a Lifetime...

The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Program exposes students to complex social and cultural issues through community visits, experiential learning, direct service, group discussion, readings, and reflection activities. Our vision is to transform students into advocates of social change on issues affecting our communities.

Applications for the 2015-16 Coordinators Team and TGB/ASB Program Leaders are open!

We are delighted to announce that applications to be part of next year's Alternative Breaks @ Stanford Coordinators Team, and applications to lead a ThanksGiving Back or Alternative Spring Break program for 2015-16 are open!

Coordinators Team Application Information

The Alternative Breaks @ Stanford Coordinators team consists of 6-8 folks (including the Executive Director, ThanksGiving Back Director, Associate Director of Finance, and the Program Leader Advisors) who work closely with the 36-46 program leaders and the Haas Center staff advisor to help plan and facilitate all aspects of the Alternative Breaks @ Stanford programs. If you are interested in playing a vital role in coordinating one of Stanford's largest public service programs, please consider applying. Applications are due Friday, April 10th, at 11:59pm.

TGB/ASB Program Leader Application Information

Interested in leading a public service learning program over Thanksgiving or Spring break? Do you have a passion for a particular social issue or cause and want to share that with others? Consider applying to be a program leader for ThanksGiving Back or Alternative Spring Break. Applications are due Friday, April 17, 2015 by 5:00pm.

  3. ASB and VIA (formerly Volunteers in Asia) is continuing its second year partnership of offering an ASBxVIA program on "Design-thinking for Social Innovation: Stanford-Japan Exchange". We are looking for two co-leaders for this program. If interested, click here for the application.

Thank you to all who expressed interest in ASB for this year. We received an overwhelming number of applications. It is so exciting to see that a large number of students are interested in service-learning.

Alternative Spring Break applications are due November 3, 11:59PM. 

This year, we are offering 17 different courses and trips. 4 are travel trips - 2 going to Washington, D.C., 1 going to Detroit, and 1 going to South Dakota - and 13 trips are traveling within California (from the Bay Area to the Central Valley to Los Angeles). 

All Stanford students are encouraged to apply! Each applicant can apply to up to 3 different courses & trips.

2014 Thanksgiving Back (TGB) Applications Are Live Now!

All Interested Stanford Students Are Encouraged to Apply for TGB!

Kick off the academic year by engaging with fellow students, social issues, and the communities right in Stanford's backyard. What better way to give thanks than to give back? Take advantage of this opportunity to work with inspiring community leaders, alumni, and friends to make a positive difference. 

Thanksgiving Back (TGB) is a program sponsored by Stanford Alternative Spring Break. Based on the much-loved ASB service-learning model, TGB gives students an opportunity to participate in public service and experiential learning over Thanksgiving Break.

This year, we will have 3 trips:

  1. EdTech: How Silicon Valley is Shaping the Future of Education
  2. Urban Food Solutions: Strategies for Sustainble Food
  3. Medicine in Science and Society

You can apply for up to 3 trips! Applications are due by Wednesday, October 15th, 11:59 pm. Due to high traffic website at that time, it is strongly recommended that you submit your application sooner rather than later.
