Summary

The car/auto magazines are exclusively targeted at a male audience. The juxtoposition of car magazines with others genres is as follows:

In some of the smaller stores, where less magazines were displayed, it seemed that each shelf was themes: men- both genders- women. No where did I see any magazines aimed at women or located near women themed magazines.

Esquire (2005) Spied! The Coolest Cards of the Next Twelve Months and Beyond
I stumbled on this article while I was killing some time at Green. I was flipping through lifestyle magazines to see if any had cars I wasn't seeing other places, only to find this article. The main thing that I struck me as interesting is the graphics for each car. (I know a few pages are missing...the online version via Gale is missing them).

What's on the shelf

Serena Love writes notes from the 'field':

I went to Fry's in Palo Alto today (Sunday, May 29, 2005) to look at car audio and other external media and entertainment enhancements (see other page). On my way through, I had a look at the magazines. On the left, the car enthusiast magazines were next to magazines with a paintball and ‘fighting’ theme. On the right, there was pornography, fishing and gun themed magazines. None of these magazines were being pitched at women. The “women’s” magazines were located three rows over, with themes like home, garden, cooking, weddings, fitness and children. At this point, I was told that I was not allowed to take photographs of any store products. I think the man who asked me was more embarrassed than I was.

Serena Love writes: I went into Target for some other random things and figured that I'd have a look at the magazines while I was there. This time, it was a mixed bag but the magazine section was very small. I noticed, however, most of the 'girly' magazines were located at the register and the ones here were the ones you'd really have to go out of your way to find.
