Our lab uses two Water's HPLC systems; each equipped with C18, C4, and Atlantis T3 columns. The Alliance is an automated analytical scale system and is equipped with a photodiode array detector. The preparative scale system is then used to purify large quantities of sample prior to further experimentation.
Tissue Culture Hoods/Thermo Scientific Heraeus
HERAcellR 150 CO2 Incubator
HERAcellR 150 CO2 Incubator
For cell culture work, we have two tissue culture hoods, 4 and 6 feet in width. In addition to these hoods, our lab's cell culture facility is equipped with two CO2 incubators, liquid nitrogen storage, and a microscope
ABI 433A Peptide Synthesizer
The ABI 433A is an automated solid-phase organic synthesizer that is used for the assembly of synthetic peptides, generally by Fmoc protecting chemistry. In addition to peptides, our lab also uses a custom protocol on the 433A to produce all of the peptoids used in our research. The instrument is capable of synthesis on scales ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mmol
Anton Paar Physica MCR 301 Rheometer
The Anton Paar Physica MCR 301 rheometer in our lab is used to analyze physical properties (i.e. viscosity, storage modulus, loss modulus) of polymer and protein solutions. Our rheometer grants us the flexibility to analyze small sample sizes down to 100 µL without compromising viscosity and elasticity measurements.
The Wyatt Light Scattering equipment in our lab is used to characterize the absolute molecular weight and radius of polymers and other colloids in solution. Our system is composed of a mutli-angle light scattering (MALS) detector (DAWN HELEOS II) to measure the size of the colloid as well as a refractive index detector (Optilab rEX) to measure the dn/dc value of the sample. Samples can be size fractionated upstream from the light scattering equipment by using either Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) or Asymmetric flow Field Flow Fractionation (AFFF).
The Barron laboratory has a custom built microscope system for high speed sequencing of DNA on microfluidic chips. This specialized system consists of two main parts. The first component is a chip electrophoresis control unit with Labview control software; the second component is the microscope shown in the figure below. The system can handle up to 10 dyes separated by 25nm. Data is collected at 100Hz, which is the theoretical separation speed for peaks as they electrophorese in the microchip channel.
Barron Laboratory Microscope chip system overview. Upper components for supplying light from a laser (left) or white light for fluorescence (right). Microscope side port sends light from 4 color sequencing fluorescence to a prism. The light is separated spatially and the wavelength is known by calibrated position on the CCD chip.
ABI 3100 Genetic Analyzer
The ABI 3100 Genetic Analyzer is a high-throughput automated capillary electrophoresis instrument with sixteen capillaries in parallel and fluorescence-based detection. Our lab uses the ABI 3100 to separate DNA and proteins, both in polymer-matrix based electrophoresis and through free-solution electrophoresis.
Beckman ProteomeLab PA 800 Protein Characterization System
An automated capillary electrophoresis instrument with UV, PDA (photodiode array) and LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) detections for various applications including SDS gel electrophoresis, carbohydrate profiling, capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) and peptide mapping.
NanoDrop 1000 and 3300
The NanoDrop 1000 is a full-spectrum UV/Vis spectrophotometer used to quantify nucleic acids, proteins, fluorescent dyes and other compounds. The NanoDrop 3300 is a versatile fluorometer used for measuring fluorescence. Both systems only require a 1µl sample volume.
Guava EasyCyteT Plus System
The Guava EasyCyteT Plus System, a small, handy flow cytometry, provides absolute cell counts and offers other high-demand features, such as six parameters (4 fluorescent colors, 2 light scatter) and has a blue laser for access to commonly used fluorescent dyes. It also offers a fourth color option, which, when combined with the built-in 96-well autosampler, allows researchers to obtain even more data while performing more complex biological studies such as cell phenotyping, multiplex compound screening, and etc.
