A level-set particle splitting procedure for the comminution and fragmentation of granular systems
We develop a new particle splitting procedure based on level sets for the comminution and fragmentation of granular systems. The splitting process can potentially be driven by deterministic or probabilistic rules in conjunction with discrete simulations, or through image data obtained from tomographic-based experiments. The splitting procedure operates directly on discrete signed distance fields, which have already been obtained from particle characterization and used in contact calculations. The proposed procedure aims to generalize earlier probability-of-survival-based treatments of granular systems comprising of idealized geometries (e.g. disks and spheres), potentially enabling its application for comminution studies of real granular materials.Author(s):
