How do I book Stanford Chinese Dance for my event?

Aside from dance showcases, Stanford Chinese Dance also performs at special banquets, graduation dinners, and Lunar New Year festivals and shows held anywhere from dorms, dining halls, and stages on campus to places like Great America and San Francisco. To book us for your event, email us at StanfordChineseDancers(at)gmail(dot)com. Please include details on the event date, performance time, and requested duration of performance. We look forward to working with you!

What are the requirements for joining Stanford Chinese Dance?

We only require that you are a Stanford undergraduate student interested in learning the art of Chinese dance.

No previous experience with Chinese dance is reqired - we accept all undergraduates willing to learn! In fact, many of our current members joined without having had previous dance experience, and we require no try-outs. We also happily welcome and encourage students of all backgrounds and ethnicities to join us. Again, we only require that you are a registered Stanford undergraduate student (enrolled in a degree-granting program and in good academic standing) with an interest in Chinese dance. We look forward to meeting you soon!

[NOTE: We are only accepting new undergraduate members - graduate student membership is closed.]

What is the time commitment for joining?

We have one 2-hour long practice each week with the exception of Dead Week, Finals Week, holidays and breaks. We also have several performances each quarter. We gladly work with members' schedule conflicts, so don't be worried if you cannot make each performance!

If you have additional questions or concerns regarding the time commitment, please ask!

I want to join the group, but I am not a current Stanford undergrad. Can I still join?

No. Unfortunately, Stanford Chinese Dance is an undergraduate Stanford student organization with membership priority available only to current undergrads. We are unable to open membership to the rest of the community, but we encourage you to find another Chinese dance performing group in your area!

If you are a Stanford alum interested in continuing Chinese dance, or even if you are a non-Stanford affiliate, please contact our choreographer Hai Yan Jackson for alternative opportunities to join her private classes in San Francisco.

If you are a Stanford graduate student, we suggest you also contact our choreographer for alternative class opportunities, or you may wish to check back here in later quarters while waiting for a graduate student membership opening. As Stanford Chinese Dance is an undergraduate student organization, graduate student membership is highly restricted and is currently full.

Does Stanford Chinese Dance's repertoire include lion or dragon dancing?

Due to our limited funds, we unfortunately cannot include either lion or dragon dancing in our repertoire. We mainly focus on classical and contemporary Chinese dances. However, if you are interested in helping start a lion dance group on campus, please contact Jacky Lee (jackyl14@stanford.edu).
