Matt and Patricia attended the 14th European Microwave Week (EuMW) in Manchester, UK on October 9-14. They both presented talks in the Sensing Systems session of the European Microwave Conference. The papers for these talks will be available soon on the ArXive. Matt’s paper is entitled “Technology Developments for a Scalable Heterodyne MMIC Array at W-band” and Patricia’s paper, entitled “A G-Band Cryogenic MMIC Heterodyne Receiver Module for Astronomical Applications,” was on the short list for the EuMIC Best Paper Award!
Matt and Patricia also teamed up with Mai Ali of American University of Sharjah to participate in the EuMW Student Challenge, which involves making a poster during EuMW about a new application for technology presented in at least two different papers in the conference proceedings. The group chose to address the theme “Technology for an Aging Population” with an in-home monitoring system called “Safe House” that would allow elderly patients to remain independent in their homes longer. The system measures the glucose level and heart rate of the home residents and transmits the information to their doctor for long-term monitoring. It also has a fall detection system which automatically calls emergency response professionals when triggered. The team’s poster won third place in the competition!
