2010-06-07 Markus Covert named as a recipient of the Hellman Faculty Scholar Award for his research in "A Comprehensive Computational Model of a Microbial Cell." The Hellman Faculty Scholar fund was established in 2000 by Warren and Chris Hellman to support and encourage promising assistant professors. The Hellmans are aware that it is often difficult for junior faculty to obtain support for research after initial research funding has been expended. In an effort to support the next generation of tenure-track professors, they designed this award to offer assistance to promising young faculty in areas concerning the physical and life sciences, engineering, arts, humanities and social sciences. Dr. Covert is a member of the seventh cohort of scholars named at Stanford.

2010-02-22 In a purely logistical sense, biology can really get in the way of biological research. Cells must be cultured, nurtured, and then perturbed according to an experiment's protocol. It can be slow, demanding, and expensive work. While most kinds of scientists and engineers can use computer simulations to speed up their research, there has been no such thing as a virtual cell. Now one is taking shape in the research group of bioengineering assistant professor Markus Covert. In a matter of months, he expects to unveil the first "whole-cell" computer model of an organism.

Virtual cell would bring benefits of computer simulation to biology

2007-01-02 Covert comes to Bioengineering from CalTech where he was a postdoctoral scholar. Covert's research is in building computational models of complex biological processes and using these models to guide experimental programs that involve the dynamic behavior of NF-kappaB, an important family of transcription factors whose aberrant activity has been linked to oncogenesis, tumor progression, and resistance to chemotherapy.
