Luke is interested in how the interactions between intertidal organisms and their environment influence species distributions and community composition. In particular, intertidal organisms must often withstand prolonged exposure to the air during low tide, when they must deal with rapidly changing temperatures and severe
desiccation stress. Through a combination of modeling, laboratory, and field experiments, Luke explores where and when intertidal organisms are pushed close to their physiological limits. This includes both historical reconstructions of temperature conditions in the field, as well as making use of climate change models to predict how the intertidal environment might change in the future.
Luke received his BSc from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his PhD from Stanford University.
