About
Shane Clarkson is a Master's student in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, focusing on energy systems and thermodynamics. Shane is entering his final year of the Master's program, after completing his undergraduate degree at Stanford, also in Mechanical Engineering. As a student, his favorite classes were Finite Element Analysis in Mechanical Design (ME309) and Turbine and Internal Combustion Engines (ME257); Shane hopes to eventually apply his simulation and thermal analysis skills to the design of aircraft engines.
Shane joined the Designing Education Lab in April of 2015, and spent the summer of 2015 working with Mark Schar and Sheri Sheppard to rethink and update the "chalk lab" for ENGR14: Intro to Solid Mechanics. This lab explores tensile strength of materials by using chalk as a case study, and will be deployed to the upcoming ENGR14 class in the fall of 2015. Research involved in transforming the chalk lab included review of existing templates, identification of areas for improvement, equipment prototyping, testing and redesigning, data collection and analysis, and organized presentation of results.
When not in the lab, Shane can be found studying for his pilot's license through Stanford Flying Club at Palo Alto Airport, playing drums around campus with his band, or throwing around a football with his friends.
