Short Bio

William Sherman is Professor of Renaissance/Early Modern Studies and Director of the Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York, UK. He taught at the University of Maryland before moving to York in 2005, and he has recently held major visiting positions at Caltech and the Folger Shakespeare Library. He has received grants and fellowships from the NEH, AHRC, Mellon Foundation, Huntington Library, Bibliographical Society, and the National Maritime Museum; he currently serves as Associate Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and as a member of the council of the Society for Renaissance Studies. His most recent book, Used Books, 2007, discusses the marking up of books in the sixteenth century by a variety of different kinds of readers, Matthew Parker among them.
