Faculty Pay Spreads (Salary for 9 month appointments taken over 10-12 months)

Salary for many faculty appointments is based upon a 9 month academic year. Faculty may choose to spread pay for 9 month appointments over 10 or 12 months.

If a faculty member wishes to change his/her pay spread, contact Faculty Affairs for School of Medicine or facultyaffairs@stanford.edu for all other University departments.

Payroll Administrators can find additional information in the Staff section of this web site at Overview: Faculty-Specific Payroll Administration.

Payments for Benefits and Other Fees During Off-Salary Months

(Fees normally paid throuth payroll deduction)

A faculty member on a nine-month calendar during the University's fiscal year (September 1 through August 31) will normally elect to have his or her salary paid over a twelve-month period. Faculty members who elect to have their nine-month salary paid over a nine-, ten-, or eleven-month period must make special arrangements with the Benefits Office for continuation of benefits during periods in which salary is not paid.

To arrange to directly pay other fees normally paid through payroll deduction, such as faculty loans and/or ground and water fees, the faculty member should contact the Faculty / Staff Housing Receivables representative with in the FAIR Department of the Controller's Office.

Off-Quarter Pay and Administrative Supplemental Pay

Non-Medical School faculty who have 9 month academic year appointments may receive additional pay if they teach or perform research during the off-duty quarter. Faculty may also receive additional pay for assuming significant administrative duties. See the Faculty Handbook for the supplementary compensation policy. Supplemental pay is added to the faculty member's regular paycheck.

Payroll Administrators can find instructions for initiating off-quarter and supplemental pay in the Staff section of this web site at How To: Request Recurring Payment.

Honoraria

Occasionally, faculty may contribute to special events such as symposia, professional conventions organized and held at Stanford, or lecture series organized by Stanford colleagues outside one's own department. Faculty may also take on other nonstandard University activities at the request of the Dean or Provost. Such exceptional service may warrant supplementary pay in the form of one-time honoraria, which must be approved by the relevant Dean's Office and the Provost's Office in advance of the service being performed. Occasional token payments for services performed outside of the faculty member's normal academic duties must be paid through Payroll as an honorarium.

Payroll Administrators can find additional information on honoraria paid through payroll in the Staff section of this web site at How To: Request One-Time Payment.
