calcium ions (Ca2+)

Calcium ions play an important role in many cellular activities, such as the passing of information between neurons and down a neuron. However, in HD nerve cells, there is too much Ca2+, which leads to nerve cell death because certain molecules get activated, and destroy the cell membranes and essential proteins.
