In a back forth game between Stanford and the San Jose State, which saw six lead changes, it was eventually the visiting Spartans who pulled away late and emerged victorious. Stanford started strong out of the gates with two early tries in the first five minutes from Sophomore center Zach Saraf and Freshman wing Sam Falkenhagen. The Spartans came roaring back and dominated field position for most of the half, resulting in three tries, two of which were converted. Stanford fought back at the end of the half with a late flurry in attack to put Falkenhagen over again, and cut the Spartan half time lead to 19-17.

In the second half, Stanford started strong, creating two penalty kick opportunities, one of which Junior flyhalf Jason Liljenquist was able to convert to regain the lead. Minutes later, a long range Spartan try retook the lead, but Stanford regrouped once more to put Sophomore lock Ausin Carey over, which Liljenquist converted for a 27-24 Stanford lead. However, the last quarter of the game saw momentum shift the Spartans way. A quick score put the visitors ahead, and two late tries saw them seal the deal and earn the victory. Stanford had many positive moments, and played well in patches, but an inconsistent performance allowed too many opportunities, and Stanford was unable to rally back one final time.

In the 2nd XV’s match, SJSU defeated the Stanford 2nds 62-0

Stanford Defeats University of San Diego in Season Opener

Stanford, California – Saturday January 12th

Stanford opened the 2013 season with a 15-8 victory in a hard fought and physical encounter with the University of San Diego. Stanford reclaimed the opening kickoff and shortly thereafter a USD penalty led to a Stanford lineout near the USD goal line. Stanford’s forwards won the ball and drove the maul over for a 2nd minute score by Junior 8-Man Dan Agness, and early 5-0 lead. USD fought back hard in the first half, owning the lions share of possession and territory, but could only muster a penalty to narrow the score line to 3-5 Stanford in the 19th minute. The Stanford forwards pushed over another maul from a lineout, scored again by Agness, with minutes remaining in the half to push the Cardinal lead to 10-3. The half finished with USD camping out near the Stanford goal line, only to be held out time and time again by tenacious defense, and the half ended 10-3 Stanford.

Then second half was very similar to the first, both physical and scrappy. Again USD was able to own most of the possession and territory in the game, but Stanford defended doggedly. Finally in the 57th minute USD breached the Stanford goal line to close the score to Stanford 10-USD 8. Stanford regrouped to mount an attack late in the half and freshmen Sam Falkenhagen went over in the corner to give the Cardinal a 15-8 lead, which Stanford would hold out until the final whistle.

In the 2nd XV’s match, Peninsula Green defeated Stanford 58-12.
