Cardinal Opens the Season with Dramatic Come From Behind Victory

Stanford, Ca. Saturday January 11th, 2014

Under the lights at Stanford’s Steuber Rugby Stadium, Stanford staged a dramatic late comeback to overcome a ten-point half time deficit, and open the 2014 season with a 19-17 victory over non-conference opponent, the University of San Diego.

Early in the match, Stanford dominated territorial advantage before a turnover led to a USD break into Stanford territory, resulting in a Stanford penalty, converted by USD for a 3-0 lead 18 minutes in. Stanford rallied back immediately when wing Nino Abundes made a long break from a strong Stanford scrum, and lock Austin Carey was on scene to dive over from the ensuing ruck. Fullback Sam Falkenhagen converted the difficult sideline conversion for a 7-3 Stanford lead 23 minutes in. The rest of the half belonged to USD, as two mismanaged Stanford possessions in their own half, resulted in USD tries that were converted, and at the half, the score was 17-7 USD.

In the second half, Stanford applied early pressure and scrumhalf Alejandro Sanchez exploited a gap from a set piece move to score from 30 meters out to close the gap to 5 points, 17-12 USD. The rest of the half was a sea-saw battle. Stanford sustained multiple USD threats near their goal line to keep the game close. Eventually, Stanford was able to work their way down into USD’s territory with an effective kick and chase game. As time winded down, Austin Carey went over again to level the score, and Sam Falkenhagen converted the pressure conversion kick to take the lead 19-17. Stanford repelled a relentless USD attack in the extra time with a strong defensive effort to hold onto the narrow victory.

In the JV match, Stanford lost to a strong local Peninsula Green Club team. Despite the loss, a very young Cardinal JV side improved dramatically throughout the game, and were able to rally for a late second half try by freshman Ian McColl. Freshman Drew Lexmond, Adam Halper, Dylan Liu, and Jack Chabolla all had strong performances, as did sophomore captain Rory-Houghton Berry.

Next Up: Stanford takes on local rival and non-conference opponent Santa Clara at Stanford’s Steuber Rugby Stadium on Friday January 24th at 7pm.
