"A reflection on those who have taught me, directly and indirectly, and an invitation to join me in gratitude."
In Dr. Kahwajy's research, she discovered one secret ingredient to effective interactions that transforms difficult situations and helps us break through our own expectation barriers. Her findings update our understanding of how we connect, how we manage to change, and how we can bring out the best in each other and realize full potential.
Dr. Kahwajy’s research gets beyond descriptions of what to do and shares prescriptions of how to do it, including the seemingly paradoxical reality of succeeding through humility.
Some of the significant features of our era include the design of large-scale systems; advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, medicine and public policy; the role of social networks in predicting behavior and toppling governments and the allocation of resources for homeland security. A common theme in all these features is the need for a sound decision-making system. Dr. Abbas will discuss examples of how Ron Howard’s methodology for reasoning about decisions continues to spread and influence numerous areas today.
Dr. Ali E. Abbas is Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Professor of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. He also serves as the Director of the Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making. He previously directed the National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE).
Dr. Horvitz will share his thoughts about the influence of Ron Howard’s contributions to research and development in artificial intelligence. Eric Horvitz is a technical fellow at Microsoft where he serves as the director of Microsoft Research Labs. His efforts and collaborations have led to fielded systems in the realms of healthcare, transportation, e-commerce, productivity, and computer operating systems. He currently serves on the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) of the National Academies, the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Allen Institute for AI. He has served as president of the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI), NSF’s CISE Advisory Committee, and the NITRD Working Group of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Eric has been elected fellow of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, AAAI, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).
