MS&E's 2015 Reunion: October 23-24, 2015
Be
sure to make plans to attend this year's MS&E Reunion on Friday and
Saturday, October 23-24. We'll start things off on Friday with a
reception for all alumni, students, faculty and staff.
On Saturday morning, we'll host a special event for MS&E Masters program alumni of all years.
Stay tuned for more information over the coming months. Our
featured speaker will be Professor Kathleen Eisenhardt, who will share
findings from her latest research and new book, Simple Rules: How to Thrive in a Complex World,
just launched. She'll talk about how people and businesses use rules of
thumb to create strategies and tame complexity when there is just too

Social Cost of Carbon Emissions May Be Nearly Sixfold That of U.S. Government Estimates
Two Ph.D. candidates have shown that the
U.S. government has underestimated economic damages from carbon
emissions. According to coauthors Delavane Diaz (MS&E) and
Frances Moore (School of Earth Sciences), this data is essential for

Valuable Role in Brokering Partnerships Between Startups
and Corporate Investors
A study covering 25 years of data,
conducted by MS&E Professor Riitta Katila and two MS&E Ph.D.
alumni, Professor Ben Hallen (Univ of Washington) and Jeff Rosenberger
(private sector), examines how and why VCs play a valuable role in

Professor
Sharad Goel joined MS&E this academic year as part of the
department's increasing emphasis on computational social science.
His recent work identifies racial bias and Fourth Amendment
violations in New York City's former stop-and-frisk police program.

In her new book, Simple Rules: How to Thrive in a Complex World, MS&E
Professor Kathleen Eisenhardt, along with co-author Donald Sull of MIT,
distills decades of research on how individuals and organizations
succeed in complex, frenetic environments into a fun, captivating read.
Sharing principles that apply to busy lives at work and home, the book
looks at what simple rules are, where they come from and why they work
in a variety of situations - ranging from coping with insomnia and
scaling ventures like Airbnb to gardening, playing poker and setting

How Do You Teach Technology Entrepreneurship? Watch This.
How do you create a successful startup?
What is entrepreneurial leadership in a large firm? What are the
differences between an idea and true opportunity? How does an
entrepreneur form a team and gather the resources necessary to create a
great enterprise? ENG 145, a course open to all undergraduate students
of all majors, leads students through a mentor-guided project to develop
their own startup ideas. Taught by Stanford Technology Ventures Program
(STVP) faculty co-director, Professor Tom Byers, this course examines
the fundamentals of technology entrepreneurship as practiced in Silicon

Spring DFJ Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders (ETL) Series:
Come hear the stories and insights of leaders in technology, business,
finance, education and philanthropy every Wednesday this quarter at 4:30
p.m. in the School of Engineering’s NVIDIA Auditorium. The Spring
lineup includes speakers Kyle Forster, Mike Rothenberg, Chinedu Echeruo
(pictured bottom left), Will Marshall and Susan Koger. All talks
are free and open to the public. If you can't make it to campus,
