Spring Quarter Events:

Iran-Argentia World Cup Match

Doostan,
It's football season and the world is being focused on one thing, the World Cup. 2014 World Cup has commenced and it's time to catch up with football fever where all teams are fighting for the most coveted trophy.
In what promises to be another unforgettable experience for football lovers, PSA is happy to announce screening of Iran-Argentina match next Saturday June 21st. The match begins at 9:00 a.m. We will get together at 8:00 to prepare ourselves for the huge adrenaline pump. The game is on Saturday, so it does not conflict with your work and there is nothing for you to do except join us and support our beloved "Team Melli". SMS competition ("Mosabegheye Payamaki"), "korry khooni", signing ball and painting Iran's flag on our faces are just part of fun things we plan to do the day. Bring your "Tokhme" ans snack and join us Saturday June 21st, 8:00 a.m.

There is one more reason that makes this event special to us. If you recall, our first event as new PSA board was screening "Iran-Korea" match for the World Cup qualification and fate made our last event to be football related as well. This event will be the current board's closing ceremony. We invite all of you to be with us, celebrate the whole year of joy we had with you, take group pictures, and pass activities to the new board.

Teaching Art in Tehran
Wednesday, February 12th, 7:30PM, Wallenberg Building 160-124 at Stanford Main Quad

Free Parking Available Anywhere on Campus Starting After 4PM
Free and open to the public
This event will be in English

Bobak Etminani will be sharing his 22 years of academic and private teaching in Iran condensed into a speech introducing a developed method of teaching modern academy to few generations of young Iranian artists, showing students works and a 7-minute video of a workshop conducted by the artist at the University of Tehran in 2012.

Biography: Bobak Etminani was born in Tehran in 1957. Having received Alborz high school diploma he went to England to study medicine but the subject didn't interest him at all. He left school all together and moved to the United States in 1979 to live and work. In December 1984, at the age of twenty eight and with no prior interest in art, a sudden mystical experience in Berkeley, California drew him intensely in art. The following spring he began his formal education at the California College of the Arts and received his BFA and MFA degrees in drawing and painting with high distinction. In 1992 he returned to Iran to artistically connect with his roots, taught at various art universities in Tehran, co-founded a methodical art academy with his wife, and meanwhile, in his Tehran studio--focusing on a single artistic idea for two decades--he created bodies of work that embody the cosmic oneness.

Commemoration of Maestro Mahmoud Zoufonoun

The Persian Student Association, The Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies and The Bita Daryabari Endowment in Persian Letters present:

Commemoration of Maestro Mahmoud Zoufonoun

Mahmoud Zoufonoun
Last October, the Persian community lost Maestro Mahmoud Zoufonoun, one of the most valuable, accomplished and influential musicians in the art of Persian traditional music.
Please join us, as we gather to honor his life and memories in a commemoration ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 3:30PM in Stanford University's Paul Brest Hall.
The event will consist of several eulogies delivered by notable Iranian musicians and Mr. Zoufonoun’s family, along with a few musical performances of his compositions by professional musicians.

The talks will be in Farsi and the event is free and open to the public.

Short Biography of Maestro Mahmoud Zoufonoun:
'Ostad (“Master”) Mahmoud Zoufonoun' (Persian: محمود ذوالفنون, January 1, 1920 – October 19, 2013) was an accomplished musician in the art of Persian traditional music. Zoufonoun's interest in music began after he secretly listened to his father (Habib Zoufonoun) playing and teaching the tar. Habib began teaching his son the instrument at age 8. Aged twelve, already having become a local teacher for tar, Zoufonoun became interested in the violin. Since he was unable to obtain an instrument of his own he designed and made his own instrument. In the 1930s Zoufonoun moved to Shiraz where he learned musical notes from a clarinet teacher and took lessons in the violin. In 1936 (aged 16) Zoufonoun, at the prompting of his first violin teacher Mr. Vaziritabar, moved to Tehran where he took lessons from Rouben Gregorian. In the early 1940’s Zoufonoun began playing solo's on Radio Iran. In 1942 he helped form Anjomane Mooseeghee Melli where he met Rouhollah Khaleghi (who conducted the orchestra). Zoufonoun worked as a soloist, composer, arranger and conductor at the National Radio and Television. He was a member of the “Golha orchestra”. Over the course of his career he has made efforts to compile, transcribe a compilation of regional folk songs, modes, and styles to date. The work is currently uncompleted. Following his retirement in 1976 from the National Radio and Television, Mahmoud and his family emigrated to the USA. He continued to teach and compose and perform traditional Persian music, usually with his sons as the Zoufonoun Ensemble.

Water World

Iran-Korea Football game

I hope you are all enjoying these special summer days. As you probably know, our national soccer team will play against South Korea on Tuesday 18th at 4AM PST. This is our last match in the group stage for qualification to the 2014 Brazil world cup, and if everything goes well we will see Iran participating in the world cup next summer!

On behalf of the new PSA board, I would like to invite you to a game event held at Bechtel international center that will start on Monday midnight with games and snacks and will continue till the match starts at 4AM. We will then watch the soccer game streamed online on a large screen together while we "break tokhmeh", and hopefully we will have a celebration afterwards to end this exciting event!:)

Although it is in the middle of the week, I strongly encourage you to join us and shape one of your best sports-related memories:)

Spring Quarter Events:

Fire-on-fire BBQ

Dear PSA members,

Please join us for the re-edition of Fire on Fire, a multinational BBQ party bringing together the outdoor cuisines from Argentina, Greece, Iran, Spain, Turkey and Germany on Saturday May 25, 5pm. We will have BBQ-istas from our association making sure you have the time to relax and talk for hours to people from all over the world, while you endlessly snack on our delicatessen from the grill.
We will also dance to the beat of music from a diverse set of countries.
This event is supported by the GSC, the Billie Achilles fund and the Bechtel International Center.
We are expecting more than 1000 people and the PSA is one of the few organizations serving delicious kabab. So any help from volunteers is appreciated.
Don't be late, the delicious food may not last long.
