Workshop Announcement:

From Wheelchairs to Brain Implants: Improving Assistive Technologies by
Integrating Engineering with Phychological and Ethical Research Methods and
Consumer Perspectives in Rehabilitation.

May 31 - June 4, 2000
Doubletree Suites Hotel, Chicago / O'Hare

Engineering students, faculty and researchers who are working in assistive
technology R & D are invited to apply. Those who are accepted will receive
support for travel, lodging and materials. Funding is provided by National
Institutes of Health and the Whitaker Foundation. About 45 engineers and
students will be accepted.

Those who are accepted will receive support for travel, lodging and,
materials.

Apply by March 15th.

The goal of the Workshop is to enhance the design, testing, and
implementation of assistive technology by helping biomedical and
rehabilitation engineering professionals use psychological and ethical
research methods and consumer perspectives in their work. The Workshop will
occur during an intensive four-day retreat, beginning Wednesday evening, May
31, 2000 and ending late Sunday afternoon on June 4. The workshop will
include overviews of biomedical engineering, behavioral science, ethical, and
consumer perspectives as they relate to research and development of assistive
technology, and specific issues of working with humans as research subjects
and as end-users. The workshop topics include:

    1) Establishing Shared Perspectives,
    2) Tales from the Front Lines,
    3) Special Issues When Humans Are Involved in Research,
    4) Building a Multidisciplinary Research Team, and
    5) From Concept to Research to Deployment.

The organizing committee for this workshop are all involved in
interprofessional education and research activities, most centered on
rehabilitation. Workshop faculty have been selected for their expertise in
multidisciplinary research, their willingness to discuss the benefits and
pitfalls of such collaborations, and their commitment to meet with the group
for the entire workshop.
