Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products is demonstrating software at Comdex that
adds voice functionality to the line of handheld computers.

Code-named Podius, the "command and control" software lets Pocket PC users
access e-mail messages, address book, and other personal information stored
on devices running Windows CE using voice commands.

By speaking a menu selection and then telling the device to read back the
information from the list, the user can hear an address, phone number, the
text of an e-mail message (but not attachments) and other information stored
on the device.

The user can also respond to an e-mail message by recording a .wav file,
which can be sent wirelessly as an e-mail attachment from a Pocket PC with a
modem.

The software is "speaker independent," says William DeStefanis, senior
director of product management for L&H, meaning it doesn't have to "learn" to
recognize the user's voice.
